EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that can help people process distressing or traumatic experiences that continue to affect them in the present.

Sometimes experiences that were overwhelming can continue to influence the way we feel, think, respond, or relate to ourselves and others. This may show up as anxiety, intrusive memories, emotional triggers, avoidance, or negative beliefs about yourself.

EMDR uses a structured therapeutic process to help you reprocess these experiences and develop more adaptive ways of understanding and responding to them.

EMDR is available online throughout Mexico and in person in Puerto Vallarta.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR is commonly used in the treatment of trauma and PTSD and may also be helpful for other distressing experiences and difficulties, including:

  • Traumatic experiences

  • Post-traumatic stress symptoms

  • Anxiety related to past experiences

  • Distressing memories

  • Fear and emotional triggers

  • Negative beliefs about yourself

  • Relationship experiences that continue to cause distress

  • Difficult or overwhelming life experiences

What Does EMDR Involve?

EMDR is more than simply "moving your eyes while talking about trauma."

Treatment typically involves several phases, including understanding your history and treatment goals, developing resources for emotional regulation, identifying experiences to target, and working through those experiences using bilateral stimulation.

The process is collaborative, and we work at a pace that feels manageable for you.

Can EMDR Be Done Online?

Yes. EMDR can be provided through online psychotherapy when it is clinically appropriate.

Online EMDR sessions are conducted through a secure video platform, and I use the same structured, trauma-informed approach as I would in person.

Before beginning EMDR, we'll discuss whether this approach is appropriate for your needs and make sure you have adequate resources and support for the work.

What Can I Expect From My First EMDR Session?

Your first session will focus primarily on getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, discussing your history and goals, and determining whether EMDR is an appropriate approach.

EMDR does not necessarily begin with processing a traumatic memory in the first session.
